Students from the University of Southern Maine are installing a temporary “King Tides Trail” in downtown Portland, demarcating a 3-foot rise in sea level. There are red marking-whiskers and solar lamps along the 4.1-mile trail from Bayside to the Old Port. Sidewalk decals identify significant observation points for high-tide events.
A Google map helps visitors explore the Trail. The City of Portland reviewed and permitted this temporary student art installation (which will remain up from December 8, 2014 to January 23, 2015). This USM Art Department project, affiliated with Envisioning Change, is supported by the Limulus Fund at the Maine Community Foundation through the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment’s Climate Network.
Join students for the trail opening on Monday December 8 at noon (meeting at the Bayside Trail terminus near Elm and Somerset Streets). Rain/snow date is Friday December 12 at 4 PM.
